Wanted:
Student
Technicians for
Duke
Technical
Services
About the Department:
Technical Services fills
a variety of campus support roles, mainly in the realm of special event
support. As you might guess from the name, most of our support is of a
technical nature, ranging from the relatively mundane
setting up of audiovisual equipment for classes to arranging for and
setting
up (with the help of OIT
and several other Duke depts.) 30' wide video projection
for
Duke
Basketball's frequent trips to the Final Four.
More common support of sporting events involves
setting
up and maintaining the sound system and scoreboards in Cameron
Indoor and Wallace Wade stadiums for football, volleyball,
wrestling,
and men's and women' s basketball.. (Those front row seats for
Basketball
are nice, but not being able to cheer is really difficult). Our support
of sporting events also includes field hockey, soccer, swimming, and
several
other
sports activities.
We also do sound reinforcement for bands, mics on
the
quad, conference support, major musical touring groups ......
- Work Study is welcome, but not required.
- Although we are a technically oriented
department,
we don't
require any experience.
We essentially have 2 types of work schedules
Regular Schedules
Some people prefer to have a set schedule so they
can more
efficiently budget their time. For them we offer regular weekly time
slots.
We strongly urge
new employees
to sign up for a regular time slot - it's a good way to learn about the
department, making you more valuable for the non-scheduled work which
comes up.
|
Sign up for Specific Jobs
Since so much of our work is event-driven (read
"unpredictable"),
we have a lot of need for technicians to work specific events at
various
(and frequently odd) times. We will advise you of these events by
sending
out email, posting them on the bulletin board outside our office, or on
occasion calling you and asking you if you can work.
Many people find the "random scheduling"
aspect of the
job appealing, being able to work a lot on light weeks, and declining
work
when you have 2 papers due and a midterm coming up
|
| You
can, of course,
work a regular
shift and sign up for as much additional work (up to 19.9 hrs/week) as
you wish. |
Other parts of Event
Management are involved in the many aspects of theater
production,
video production, and conference planning. By being part of Technical
Services, you may also have opportunities to work with Theater
Operations, Recording
Studio, or Conferences
Services.
For most people the starting pay rate is $7.50/hr.
Most
of our technicians get raises to Tech I ($8.00/hr.) after completing a
semester of working for us. After that, achieving the two remaining pay
levels Tech II ($8.50) and the prestigious and vaunted Senior. Tech
$(9.00)
is a matter of ability, experience, and dedication. These base rates
are
usually increased each summer.
If you're interested in working with us or to get
more
information, call (660-1732) or email
the supervisor of student technicians, Mark Kitchens. You can also just
drop by (see directions below), but realize that there is a good chance
we might all be out when you come by. If you're pretty sure you'd like
to work with us, bring the required
paperwork when you come by.
.
To Get Hired:
If you are
currently on a Duke department payroll or have been in the
past
month, you will need to have that department fax a copy of your Confirmation/Employee
Data Sheet to our business office at 660-1719. Please have
them put "Technical Services" on
the
sheet and indicate whether you will continue to work for your current
Duke
employer in addition to working for Technical Services. If you have not
been
on a Duke payroll in the past month, see paperwork
requirements below.
- Federal regulations require that you fill out
an I-9
form to prove your right to work in the US. If you are a US
citizen,
the most common documents to use are a legitimate photo ID and a Soc.
Security
Card. If you have any questions about other alternatives, please see
the
last page of the I-9
form or ask.
- Regretfully, getting paid usually means paying taxes, so you will
need
to fill out Fed Tax W4
and NC
4 forms for tax withholding.
- You will need to provide direct-deposit
information in order to be paid.
- If you have a driver's license and wish to
drive
during the
course of your work with us (which will greatly increase the amount
that you can work), we will need to make a photo copy of your
license (note that the license will also meet the requirements of the
I-9 photo
ID mentioned above).
- If you have work-study, we will need those
papers as
well.
If you wish to get on our payroll, you need to meet
with Elaina
Cheek our payroll
clerk. If you have not already gotten the documents
mentioned
above, she will have the forms to be filled out (Note that you still
will
need to bring I-9 documentation, driver's license, and work study
papers).
Her phone number is (660-1773) and she is located at 042A Bryan Center.
You might want to call to make sure that she will be there. If you have
any questions, call (or email one of us by clicking on the appropriate
link [above or below])
Directions to Our Offices
To get to our offices in the Bryan University Center
(not to be confused with the Bryan Research Bldg.):
If Driving:
From Erwin Rd,
turn on to Towerview (road continues on other side of Erwin as Morreene
Rd), head SE to the intersection of Towerview and Science Drive
and
turn left ....
From Duke
University road, turn on to Towerview, go around the traffic
circle (if you're from the South), the rotary (if you're from the NE)
or the roundabout (if you're from the UK) , continue past tennis
courts, Cameron Indoor Stadium, and the Terry Sanford Inst.
of Public Policy on your left. Don't look at the Sanford bldg. too
closely as you should be getting in the right lane at the intersection of Towerview and Science Drive and
should turn right....
The intersection of Towerview and Science
Drive has the Gross Chemistry bldg on one corner, the law school
on one
corner, the Terry Sanford Inst. of Public
Policy and (so far) woods on the 4th corner. Head northeast
with the chemistry bldg on your left and notice the camel on the left
at the bottom of the hill.
If picking up or
returning equipment and we have asked to you meet us at our
loading dock or back door then, once again, don't look too closely at
the camel as you will be taking a right turn just after the camel and
just before Bryan Center parking deck (AKA PG IV). Just
past the (card access only) back entrance to the parking deck will be
our 2
bay loading dock (which we share with the Theaters)
with a pedestrian door to the left of the bays. Just past the
loading dock is
the end of the drive (approximately
N36° 00.051' W78° 56.490' for the GPS inclined) and just past
that is our back door. Note that this is a fire
lane and our back door is usually locked, so it is inadvisable to
come here unless we have made plans to meet you.
If coming to talk
with us or pick-up or return small equipment, continue on
Science Drive just past
the parking deck and take a right into the Bryan Center parking
lot. Park in the lot or in the deck. Come in the door off
of the circle,
past the information desk and bear to your right to find the
elevator. Then pick up the directions below.
If walking from main campus: Take
the elevator at the end of the bldg. opposite the Student Plaza
(formerly known as the Bryan Center walkway). Go down to
the
1st floor. Go through the wooden door in front of you when the elevator
opens, take the 3rd door on the left, go up a stairway and go through
the
door at the top. Take a left and you're in the business office area. If
instead of an immediate left, you go forward, Selden
Smith is the first door on the left, Mark
Kitchens is the second door on the left, and
Tom
Whiteside is the second door on the right.
